English Institute of Sport – Sheffield

The English Institute of Sport stands in Sheffield’s Lower Don Valley between the Sheffield Arena and Don Valley Bowl. Its main feature is a 200-metre indoor athletics track, but it also contains several sports halls, a large gym and sports medicine facilities. The building sits on the site of the old Don Valley Stadium, now part of the Olympic Legacy Park. The centre trains athletes in athletics, basketball, boxing, fencing, futsal, judo, netball, table tennis and volleyball. City of Sheffield Athletic Club and Sheffield Futsal Club meet here regularly, alongside England Netball and the snooker professional academy. Local secondary schools often hold sports days at the venue. It has hosted major events such as the European Indoor Athletics Trials in 2009 and the European Fencing Championships in 2011. British athletes prepared here for the 2012 Olympics, and it also staged Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup matches in 2021. Visitors find a 200-metre indoor running track at the heart of the building. Around it lie sports halls for basketball, judo and volleyball, a fencing salle, a boxing ring and a large gym. The snooker academy occupies a dedicated area, while sports medicine rooms support training. Outside, the site links to the wider Olympic Legacy Park, once home to the Don Valley Stadium.
