Ameringkogel

The Ameringkogel rises as the highest peak of the Packalpe, a mountain chain in the Lavanttaler Alps east of the Lavant valley. Its grassy crest, gently sloping on either side, runs north to south for several kilometres. The massif towers more than 1 500 metres above the Aichfeld basin, giving it a commanding presence in the landscape. The summit marks the boundary between the Styrian villages of Obdach and Weißkirchen. To the northwest the Größenberg stands just thirty-five metres lower, while to the southeast the Packalpe ridge continues over the Hofalmkogel and Speikkogel. Geologists recognise the Ameringkogel as an independent block of orthogneiss, linked only by the Obdacher Sattel to the higher Seetaler Alps. A straightforward route starts at the Hirschegger Sattel and passes the Speikkogel and Hofalmkogel before reaching the top. Walkers cross wide alpine meadows where cattle graze in summer. With clear weather the three-hour climb offers no technical challenges and rewards the effort with wide views across Styria.
