Shute Shelve Cavern

Shute Shelve Cavern is a natural cave system in the Mendip Hills above Axbridge in Somerset. It lies on Shute Shelve Hill, a short distance from Cheddar Gorge. The cave formed as a phreatic system, carrying water through the rock long before it was mined. Fossils of speleothems inside date back more than 350,000 years. Until the 1920s the cavern was worked for yellow ochre, a pigment used in paints, giving it the local name Axbridge Ochre Mine. The cave is managed by the Axbridge Caving Group to protect its features and visiting bats. Access is through a locked gate and the entrance is closed during the bats’ roosting season. Inside, Chamber 1 shows scalloped walls, old miners’ supports and a large geode on the left. Chamber 2 is a tall rift with taped-off areas to preserve fragile formations. Beyond these, Box Tunnel and Elm Street lead deeper into the system. A short walk away lies Carcass Cave dig, once served by a monorail, ladders and platforms. Both caves sit within a landscape rich in cave systems and mining history. The Mendip Hills around Axbridge offer quiet paths and sweeping views over the Somerset Levels. Visitors can sense the long human and geological story etched into these hills.
