St. Martini (Emmerich)
St Martin’s is a Catholic parish church in Emmerich am Rhein, standing on the edge of the old town near the river. Built of brick and tufa, it mixes Romanesque and Gothic shapes: a round-arched crypt below, a high choir above, and a two-aisled nave that leans slightly off centre. The sturdy west tower, nicknamed the ice-breaker for its resistance to river ice, was rebuilt after war damage in modern lines. The church carries layers from nine centuries of repairs and changes. After Napoleon closed the collegiate foundation in 1811, the parish kept the building alive through floods, fires and the Second World War, when only the outer walls survived. Restoration lowered and then raised the floor, rebuilt the aisles, and recreated the lost high choir vaults. Traces of the original basilica remain in the crypt and choir piers. Inside, flat ceilings span the crossing and south transept while the nave vaults rise in Gothic ribs. The 1530s brass font from Antwerp, damaged in the war, shows pure Renaissance motifs. A small upper chapel holds colourful mosaics of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The crypt’s barrel vault and the modern main organ with its ship model rising from the pipes complete the visit.
