St Leonard's Without

St Leonard’s Without stands beside the remains of Kirkstead Abbey, a 12th-century Cistercian monastery near Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire. Built between 1230 and 1240 as the abbey’s outer chapel, it was known as the capella ante portas—Latin for a chapel outside the gates. The name ‘Without’ points to its position beyond the abbey’s walls. Measuring only 12.8 metres by 5.8 metres, the building still meets the high craft standards of larger cathedrals. It may have been erected as a chantry chapel to honour Robert de Tattershall, who died in 1212. The chapel is a Grade I listed example of Early English architecture. After centuries as a parish church it closed in 1877 when a Presbyterian group was removed. From 1883 the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings campaigned to halt its decay. In 1913 and 1914 the architect William Weir carried out a full restoration, returning the chapel to use. Inside, the chapel’s narrow space holds simple lancet windows and plain stonework typical of the 13th century. The restored interior shows the careful joinery and ribbed vaulting of the Early English style. Outside, the roofline and buttresses reflect the same period detail. The ruined abbey walls stand a short walk away, framing views across the Lincolnshire countryside.
