Courtyard Centre for the Arts

The Courtyard Centre for the Arts is a theatre and arts venue in Hereford, standing just outside the city centre on Edgar Street. It replaced an old theatre that had once been a swimming baths. The new building opened in 1998 after a design competition judged by the Royal Institute of British Architects. Glenn Howells designed the glass and wooden structure, inspired by Elizabethan courtyard theatres. The name comes from this historical influence. The centre hosts in-house productions like pantomimes and shows by youth and community groups. It also screens films during the Borderlines Film Festival each year. The Main House and Studio both serve as cinemas, while the Studio doubles as a lecture hall. David Cameron launched a campaign there in 2005. Free events such as jazz nights and open-mic sessions take place in the licensed café-bar. Inside, the building contains an art gallery and two conference rooms on the ground and first floors. A rehearsal room and dance studio occupy the second floor. The total seating capacity is around 520 across both venues. The Courtyard has welcomed about 1.2 million visitors since it opened. Its patrons include actors Sir Derek Jacobi and Jo Brand.
