Edgar Street

Edgar Street stands on the edge of Hereford city centre, next to the old cattle market now called The Old Market. The stadium has been a sporting ground since the late 19th century and became home to Hereford United in 1924. After the club folded in 2014 a new phoenix club, Hereford FC, took over the lease. The ground is the largest football stadium in Herefordshire and sits beside the A49. Its name comes from the street on which it is built. The ground has seen notable moments such as the 1957–58 FA Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday that drew 18,114 spectators. In 1974 it became one of the few outside the top flight to have two cantilever-roof stands. The pitch itself was once the widest in the Football League at 76 yards after the running track was turfed over. Hereford FC’s biggest home crowd came in November 2022 when 4,912 watched a match against Portsmouth. The ground has also hosted televised FA Cup games and FA Trophy semi-finals. The Merton Stand on the east side is the only seated area and holds 1,818 spectators. It contains the dugouts, players’ tunnel and club offices beneath its seating. The Meadow End at the northern end is a covered terrace for 1,400 vocal fans and slopes down towards the pitch. The Len Weston Stand on the west has 1,996 places split between terraces and a small upper tier with a high view. The Blackfriars Street End behind the southern goal was closed in 2009 and is now being redeveloped.
