Pankratiuskirche (Oberwölz)

The Pankratiuskirche stands on a rocky spur above the town of Oberwölz in the Murau district of Styria. It is a small Gothic church with a single nave and a two-bay choir ending in a three-sided polygon. The building sits on what was likely an older castle site, giving it a commanding view over the surrounding landscape. The church is worth visiting for its remarkable late-Gothic vaulting, which resembles that of Prague’s St Vitus Cathedral. Its early-Baroque high altar of 1631 by Johannes Meystätter shows the Virgin Mary flanked by saints Peter and Paul, with statues of Ulrich of Augsburg and Leonard of Limoges beside it. A painted Pietà and a late-Gothic three-seat sedilia add to the interior’s historic charm. Visitors find a quiet hilltop sanctuary with a west-side external pulpit used each year for the Leonhardi procession on 6 November. The north-east wall bears 16th-century graffiti left by travelling craftsmen. Recent restorations have preserved both the building’s fabric and its folk-art details, making it a modest but memorable place of worship.
