Glenugie distillery

Glenugie distillery was a Highland single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire. It opened in 1831 as Invernettie before changing its name to Glenugie. The site passed through several owners over 150 years, including Simon Forbes, Seager Evans & Co and Whitbread & Co. Production doubled in the 1950s after new stills and an oil-fired boiler were installed. The distillery closed for good in 1983 and was demolished two years later. The windmill tower remains as a Category B listed structure on the site. Glenugie’s history reflects the struggles of many small distilleries during the 1980s downturn. Allied Domecq later owned the distillery before its closure. The site now hosts workshops for Score Group plc. Only the windmill tower survives as a reminder of its whisky-making past. Visitors can still see the old windmill tower standing among modern industrial buildings. The surrounding area in Peterhead shows little trace of the distillery itself. The tower’s presence marks where Glenugie once produced single malt whisky. The site blends industrial heritage with contemporary use.
