Nebel Lighthouse

The Leuchtturm Nebel is a small lighthouse on the German North Sea coast in Schleswig-Holstein. It stands in the Süddorf district of the village of Nebel on Amrum island in Nordfriesland district. The tower was built in 1981 mainly from aluminium parts and painted red and white. It guides ships through the Norderaue fairway from 16 metres above mean tidal high water. Its light reaches about 19.5 nautical miles. The lighthouse is almost identical to the Wittdün lighthouse south of the island, which was switched off in 1988. It is one of four lighthouses on Amrum, alongside the active Amrum lighthouse and the Norddorf Quermarkenfeuer, plus the non-working Wittdün tower. Since 1981 it has been remotely controlled by the waterways and shipping office in Tönning. Visitors reach the tower through Süddorf’s quiet lanes lined with brick houses. A short path leads to the base of the red-and-white structure. The surrounding dunes and salt marshes stretch towards the wide sandy beach. On clear days the light’s beam can be seen cutting across the horizon. The view from the base takes in the island’s low, windswept landscape.
