War memorial beside Saint Maria (Luebeck)

The war memorial of St Marien’s parish in Lübeck stands on the church’s forecourt, a single block of grey Gotland granite on a broad stone base. It was designed by Hermann Joachim Pagels and completed in 1929 to honour the 318 parish members who died in the First World War. A bronze cross and a wreathed globe crown the front, while the east and west sides carry reliefs of St George and St Michael. The memorial’s value lies in its plain craftsmanship and its place in local memory. The granite came from Sweden by ship and was hauled through the streets by sixteen horses. The sculptor carved the figures and the biblical text directly into the stone, and a second bronze plaque inside the church lists every name in gold. After the war the inscription was extended to include those lost in the Second World War as well. Visitors find the granite block standing on church land, the only public war memorial of its kind in Lübeck. In the evening the stone catches the light and glints with mica flecks. Inside, a bronze cross-shaped tablet hangs in the choir aisle, its gilded names still partly visible behind a modern metal screen. The surrounding square and the church itself frame the sombre monument, a quiet place to remember.
