Stefan Zweig Centre Salzburg

The Stefan Zweig Centre Salzburg sits in the Edmundsburg, a historic building in the heart of Salzburg. The centre grew from a 2008 project backed by the city, the state and Salzburg University to explore the writer’s European legacy. Stefan Zweig lived in Salzburg from 1919 to 1934, and many of his best-known works were written there. The centre was renamed in 2017 when it became part of the university. Directors over the years have included Klemens Renoldner, Arturo Larcati and now Martina Wörgötter. The centre houses an exhibition that traces Zweig’s life in six sections: family, Europe, success, festivals, farewell and retrospect. A research library, donated by Zweig’s biographer Donald A. Prater, supports scholarly work on Austrian literature and culture between 1900 and 1945. The centre also runs lectures, readings and academic conferences, often with partners across Europe. Its journal Zweigheft publishes new Zweig texts and reports on events each year. Visitors find a quiet scholarly space where Zweig’s letters, documents and furniture from his estate are preserved. The library holds the Prater collection for in-house study only. Temporary exhibitions add further depth to the permanent display. The building soon to be renamed the Stefan Zweig House will bring the centre and the Salzburg Literary Archive together in the New Residence from mid-2026.
