Kokoschka-Haus

The Kokoschka-Haus stands in Pöchlarn, a town in Lower Austria on the Danube. It is the birthplace of the artist Oskar Kokoschka and now houses the Oskar Kokoschka Documentation Centre. The building on Regensburger Straße 29 was bought by the town in 1998 and turned into a modern gallery and cultural centre. The house became a meeting place for Kokoschka’s admirers in 1973 when he and his wife Olda backed the founding of the association that runs it. Every summer from May to September the association mounts an exhibition linked to Kokoschka’s work. Over the years the centre has built up a collection of his prints, documents and photographs. It also shows exhibitions by contemporary artists and screens films about his life and art. Inside, the street wing holds a permanent display on Kokoschka’s life and work, a shop and the town’s tourist office. The courtyard wing provides about 300 square metres of exhibition space. Upstairs there is a small library, and the Documentation Centre keeps its offices here. The building belongs to the Lower Austrian collections and museums and is run by the town of Pöchlarn.
