St Wilfrid's Church, Low Marnham

St Wilfrid’s Church stands in the quiet village of Low Marnham, Nottinghamshire, a Grade I listed building cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. Built mainly in the 13th century, it has grown through the 14th, 15th, 19th and 20th centuries with later restorations and additions. The church’s exterior shows the Perpendicular style, with a west tower rising in two stages above diagonal buttresses. Clock faces look out on three sides of the tower, and its embattled parapet carries corner pinnacles and two gargoyles. Diagonally placed buttresses and rows of three-light windows mark the aisles and clerestory, while carved heads appear beneath the ogee-arched south porch doorway. The interior reveals contrasting arcades: low cylindrical pillars on the north side and taller octagonal shafts on the south. Monuments to the Cartwright family line the walls, and a hatchment dated 1749 hangs in the north aisle. A tomb recess and a piscina sit in the chancel and south aisle, and fragments of 15th-century stained glass survive in the windows. The tower’s bell openings are paired and louvred, allowing sound to carry across the flat fields around the village. Five gargoyles project from the north aisle wall, each spout carved in stone. Visitors walk beneath the tower into a nave lit by clerestory windows and enter the aisles through the differing arcades. The south porch shelters the main entrance, its ogee arch richly moulded and topped with carved heads. Beyond the chancel arch lies the sanctuary with its east window and two small gargoyles. The fragment of medieval glass catches the light near the south aisle, while the Cartwright monuments stand in quiet ranks along the north wall. Outside, the churchyard slopes gently away, offering views of the surrounding countryside and the distant line of the Trent Valley.
