Holy Trinity Chapel, Capesthorne

Holy Trinity Chapel stands beside Capesthorne Hall near Siddington in Cheshire. Built in 1722 to designs by John Ward, it is a Grade II* listed Anglican church with a nave and apsidal chancel. Red brick walls carry a stone cornice and balustrade topped by swagged ball finials. The gatepiers and wrought-iron gates, dating from about 1750, are themselves listed at Grade II. The chapel’s interior was transformed in 1886–88 by Mrs Augusta Bromley Davenport. Box pews were removed, the pulpit relocated, and wall panelling raised to add a panelled ceiling. A Salviati mosaic reredos imitates Giotto’s Dormition, and the 1772 marble font rests on three clawed legs. Below the floor lie the vaults containing John Ward and members of the Bromley Davenport family. Outside, the 20th-century gatepiers carry stone caps with ball finials and Rococo statues of Saint Andrew. The slate roof and stone dressings frame a quiet parkland setting. Visitors find a calm space where classical lines meet Victorian ornament, framed by the ironwork of an earlier age.
