University of Exeter

The University of Exeter is a research university in Exeter, Devon, with its main campus on the Streatham Estate. It began as separate colleges in the 19th century, including the Exeter School of Art in 1855 and St Luke’s College in 1838. These merged in 1955 when the university received its royal charter. The Streatham campus is the largest, home to many administrative buildings and the main library. The Penryn campus in Cornwall is run with Falmouth University under a shared initiative. The university also has a smaller campus at St Luke’s, once an independent teacher-training college. The university’s history includes strong links to local benefactors and royal patronage. Streatham Hall was donated by Alderman W. H. Reed in 1922 and renamed Reed Hall. The Washington Singer building was opened in 1931 by the Prince of Wales, and Mardon Hall, the first purpose-built residence, opened in 1933. The university joined the Russell Group in 2012 and has since expanded with new facilities like the Forum and the Xfi Centre for Finance and Investment. Visitors to the Streatham campus find a mix of historic and modern buildings set in landscaped grounds. Reed Hall and the Washington Singer building reflect early 20th-century architecture. The main library holds over a million books, including special collections. The Forum serves as a central hub with shops, cafes and study spaces. The St Luke’s campus retains its original 19th-century buildings near Exeter Cathedral, offering a quieter academic atmosphere. Together, the campuses show the university’s growth from its educational roots to a leading research institution.
