Schloss Bach, Sankt Urban

Schloss Bach stands on a hill above the St Urbaner See in the southern Austrian province of Kärnten. A Renaissance building, it grew from a medieval tower first recorded in 1192 and rebuilt in the late 16th century by Christoph Freiherr von Egkh. Hannibal Eghk von Hungersbach owned it after 1569, and Carl Freiherr von Egkh added the arcaded passage in 1609. The chapel was consecrated in 1739 but destroyed by fire in 1890. Since 1991 the castle has belonged to agronomist Chlodwig Franz and his wife Johanna, a psychosomatic specialist. Inside, the irregular complex mixes towers, oriels and arcades under a high shingle roof. A red-sandstone round-arched gate marks the south front, while the north wing carries coupled windows. A cross-vaulted ground-floor passage runs the length of the building. The two upper storeys each contain a single hall lit by twin windows, and their ceilings are lined with rare 16th-century Fladerpapiere—woodcut prints framed by ornamental bands. Restorers reopened blocked eastern loggia arches and uncovered frescoes on the second floor during the late 1990s. The castle’s interiors are used for conferences and cultural events such as the Carinthische Dialoge. Outside, the hilltop site overlooks the lake and surrounding farmland. The building remains privately owned and is not open to the public, yet its preserved Renaissance fabric and recent conservation work make it a quietly impressive example of Austrian manor-house architecture.
