RAF Fairford

RAF Fairford is a Royal Air Force station in Gloucestershire, England. It shares its runways with United States Air Force personnel and aircraft. The base has housed a Lockheed U-2S detachment since 2019. It serves as the only European airfield for heavy bombers and supports Bomber Task Force operations. The runway is long enough for a Space Shuttle landing and once hosted NASA-trained crews. The station also organises the Royal International Air Tattoo, one of the world’s largest air displays. The airfield opened in 1944 to support D-Day and later operations like Operation Market Garden. During the Cold War it became a forward base for American bombers such as the B-36 and B-47. It tested Concorde in the 1970s and supported tanker missions across Europe. B-52s flew from Fairford during the Gulf War, Kosovo campaign and Iraq War. The runway was upgraded in the early 2000s to handle stealth bombers and heavy loads. Visitors to the Royal International Air Tattoo see hundreds of military aircraft on display. The two climate-controlled hangars built for B-2 Spirit bombers stand near the main runway. The long, reinforced runway remains ready for any heavy aircraft. The base’s control tower overlooks the wide expanse of tarmac. The surrounding Gloucestershire countryside provides a quiet backdrop to the airfield’s activity.
