British Library

The British Library stands in the London Borough of Camden, next to St Pancras station. It is the national library of the United Kingdom and one of the largest in the world, holding over 200 million items. As a legal deposit library, it receives copies of every book produced in the UK and Ireland, along with many overseas titles. The library also holds manuscripts, sound recordings, maps, stamps and more, in over 400 languages. Its collections include around 14 million books and items dating back to 2000 BC. Each year, the library adds about three million new items to its shelves. The library’s purpose-built building opened in 1998 and is a Grade I listed structure of exceptional architectural and historical interest. It was designed by Colin St John Wilson with his wife MJ Long, featuring a large piazza with public artworks. A central six-storey glass tower houses the King’s Library, containing 65,000 volumes collected by King George III between 1763 and 1820. Off-site storage in Yorkshire holds low-use items, delivered to London on request by a daily shuttle service. The library also preserves the UK’s digital memory, archiving websites and other electronic publications. Visitors find eleven reading rooms in the St Pancras building, each designed for different kinds of research. The King’s Library tower is a striking feature, visible from the piazza. Public art includes sculptures by Eduardo Paolozzi and Antony Gormley. The library’s collections span centuries and cultures, from ancient manuscripts to modern digital records. Researchers and the public can access materials on site or request items from storage. The building’s design and artworks make it a notable landmark in London’s cultural landscape.
