Hügelgräber Blieschow

The Hügelgräber Blieschow are nine Bronze Age burial mounds standing south of Blieschow village, which belongs to Lancken-Granitz on Rügen island. They rise in open farmland where Bronze Age people laid their dead beneath earth and stone. A map drawn in 1829 by Friedrich von Hagenow shows the cemetery once stretched farther east and south across today’s fields. Sand quarrying and military trenches in the 20th century cut into the site, reducing its visible size. The mounds are recognised as important Bronze Age monuments by archaeologists in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Their surviving earthworks still mark the places where communities buried their leaders or warriors three thousand years ago. The remaining mounds vary in height and diameter, standing as quiet reminders of ancient funeral customs. Visitors walk among low grassy domes that rise no more than a couple of metres above the surrounding fields. Paths lead from the edge of Blieschow village across open farm tracks to the scattered mounds. Each mound is surrounded by a low ring of stones that once held the earth in place. The site lies on flat land with wide views over Rügen’s gently rolling countryside. On calm days the only sounds are wind through grass and distant farm machinery. The place invites quiet reflection on the people who shaped this landscape long before written records began.
