Tremsbüttel Castle

Schloss Tremsbüttel stands in the village of Tremsbüttel in Stormarn district, southern Schleswig-Holstein. Originally a manor house built for a noble estate, its castle-like appearance has long earned it the name Schloss. The present building dates from the late 19th century and once housed a hotel until 2020. The site has been shaped by more than 800 years of history. A water castle stood here in the 13th century under the knightly family von Wedel. Later it became a ducal hunting lodge, then a classical manor under Count Christian zu Stolberg-Stolberg in the 18th century. The Stolbergs welcomed writers such as Matthias Claudius and Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock. The Hasenclever family rebuilt the house in 1894–95 in an eclectic style that blends Jugendstil and Neorenaissance. Visitors find a two-storey building with a striking tower and rich interior wood panelling and stucco. The 4-hectare park, designed in the English landscape style, still shows traces of Stolberg’s original layout with tall tree groups and water features. A Japanese garden was added in the 20th century. Though the estate farm has largely disappeared, the castle and its grounds remain a visible link to centuries of noble and cultural life.
