The Rheinstadion was a large multi-purpose stadium beside the Rhine in Düsseldorf. Built in 1926, it grew to hold 54,000 people by the time it closed. Fortuna Düsseldorf played home games there from 1953 to 1970 and again from 1972 until 2002. It hosted matches during the 1974 FIFA World Cup and the 1988 European Championships.

The stadium also welcomed American football’s Rhein Fire in 1995. They played their first season on the pitch and later hosted World Bowl ’99 and World Bowl X there. Metallica performed in 1993 with The Cult and Suicidal Tendencies as support during their Nowhere Else to Roam Tour.

After the final championship game in 2002, the stadium was demolished that summer. Its place was later taken by the Merkur Spiel-Arena in 2004.
