Hunter's Hill Stone

The Hunter’s Hill Stone, also called the Glamis 1 Stone, is a Pictish standing stone of Class II set in woodland on the north slope of Hunter’s Hill. It stands south-east of Glamis village in Angus, close to the A94 road. The stone was originally carved as a natural slab, then later a relief was added to its back. Another local stone, the Glamis Manse Stone, was treated in the same way. Both stones belong to the Aberlemno School of Pictish sculpture. This cross-slab is recognised for its fine carvings and its place in Pictish art history. It carries a relief cross on one face and incised symbols on the other. Experts classify it under the system created by John Romilly Allen and Joseph Anderson. Nearby stones such as Aberlemno 2 and Eassie share its style and period. Visitors find the stone in a quiet wooded spot beside the road. The cross face shows clear relief work, while the rear bears worn but recognisable symbols. The woodland setting keeps the atmosphere calm and reflective. From the roadside a short walk leads to the stone, where its carvings can be viewed at close hand.
