A69 road

The A69 is a main road running east–west across northern England. It starts at Denton Burn on the edge of Newcastle upon Tyne and ends in Carlisle after crossing the Pennines. The road passes through Northumberland and Cumbria, linking towns and villages along its route. The A69 carries heavy traffic between the north-east and north-west of England. Between Newcastle and Hexham it is a dual carriageway, while the rest is mostly single carriageway with climbing lanes. Campaigners have pushed for sections to be upgraded to improve safety after a 2011 report recorded 82 accidents and four deaths in one year. The road runs through the Tyne valley, crossing the River Tyne three times. It passes near Hadrian’s Wall at Milecastle 13 and bypasses places such as Corbridge, Hexham and Haydon Bridge. Near Carlisle it meets the M6 motorway and the A7 before ending at Saint Aidan’s church.
