Point of Ayr Lighthouse

The Point of Ayr Lighthouse stands on the north coast of Wales, near the village of Talacre. It was built in 1776 by a trust of Chester’s Mayor, Recorder and Aldermen to warn ships between the Dee and Mersey estuaries. The lighthouse was replaced in 1844 and later decommissioned. It is now a privately owned Grade II listed building. In 2011 it was listed for sale with two acres of land for £100,000 and sold the following year for £90,000. The lighthouse has a history of unusual events. In 2009 planning permission was sought for a stainless steel sculpture inspired by ghostly sightings on its balcony. The seven-foot figure was designed by local artist Angela Smith and stood for three years before being relocated. Storms in 2007 damaged the metal steps and created a hole in the base, repairs being covered by nearby caravan park owners. Visitors find a sturdy stone tower standing close to the shore. The surrounding land includes two acres of open ground. The lighthouse has featured in a Dulux TV advertisement marking the 50th anniversary of their Old English Sheepdog mascot. Its position offers views across the estuary and along the north Wales coast.
