III. Hornspitze

The III. Hornspitze is a mountain in the Zillertal Alps. It stands on the border between Tyrol in Austria and South Tyrol in Italy. The peak reaches 3254 metres above sea level. The mountain forms part of the main chain of the Alps. Its slopes drop steeply into valleys on both sides of the border. The mountain has long been a landmark for climbers and hikers. The first recorded ascent took place in the 19th century. Heinrich Klier and Walter Klier wrote about it in their guidebook published in 1996. Eduard Richter’s 1894 work also mentions the peak. The mountain appears on alpine club maps at a scale of 1 to 25,000. Visitors find a rugged summit with wide views across the Zillertal Alps. The route from the north follows a marked trail through alpine meadows. On the southern side the terrain is steeper and more rocky. The contrast between the two sides shows the mountain’s dramatic shape. Snow often lingers on the higher slopes even in summer.
