Bishops Lydeard Mill and Rural Life Museum
Bishops Lydeard Mill and Rural Life Museum stands in the village of Bishops Lydeard, Somerset. The main building dates from the 18th century and was enlarged in the early 19th century with a millhouse. It has an overshot waterwheel and is listed at Grade II. The wheel weighs over two tonnes and is turned by water from Back Stream, which rises in the Brendon Hills. The museum opened in 2003 after restoration work carried out since 2000. The museum shows traditional trades and crafts that once shaped rural life. Visitors find a wheelwright’s shop, a cooper’s shop, a saddler’s shop and a blacksmith’s shop. A Victorian kitchen is also on display. These workshops contain tools and objects used by craftsmen in past centuries. The displays explain how each trade contributed to the local economy. Outside, the mill sits beside Back Stream, its water still driving the large wheel. The building’s stone walls and slate roof remain largely as they were two centuries ago. The rural setting of Bishops Lydeard adds to the sense of stepping back in time. Visitors leave with a clearer picture of how country people lived and worked before modern industry arrived.
