Gamsspitzl
Gamsspitzl is a mountain in the Radstädter Tauern range of the Austrian Alps. It stands in the district of Sankt Johann im Pongau, within the federal state of Salzburg, 240 kilometres southwest of Vienna. The summit rises 2 340 metres above sea level, just 35 metres above the surrounding terrain. Its narrow base is only 90 metres wide. The landscape around the peak is rugged and sparsely populated, with about twenty people living in each square kilometre. The nearest town is Radstadt, seventeen kilometres to the north. South of the mountain the terrain is steep and rocky, while to the north it becomes rolling hills. Most of the slopes are covered in mixed forest, mainly spruce and pine. The area has few permanent residents, so walkers often have the high paths to themselves. A climb to the top rewards visitors with wide views over the Radstädter Tauern. On clear days the Hohe Tauern range appears to the southwest. The route follows a narrow ridge that narrows further near the summit. The final metres involve a short scramble over slabs of rock. From the top the surrounding valleys stretch away like a patchwork of green and brown.
