St Paul's Church, West Derby
St Paul’s Church stands in Town Row, West Derby, a suburb of Liverpool. It is an active Roman Catholic parish church in Pastoral Area 5 of the Archdiocese of Liverpool. The building is recorded on the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II listed structure. It was designed by the firm Pugin and Pugin and completed in 1914–15. In 1973–75 the interior was reordered to meet new liturgical needs. The church is built from red sandstone under a blue slate roof. Its plan includes a four-bay nave, north and south aisles, a two-bay chancel with flanking chapels, and a short southwest tower. The exterior shows free Perpendicular style with cross-gables along the sides and Geometric tracery in the east windows. The west front has two pointed entrances with a statue niche above, flanked by buttresses and lancet windows. Inside, round columns carry the arcades and support a west gallery above a narthex. Marble and alabaster fittings were designed by Pugin and Pugin. The reordered sanctuary has a forward altar with mosaic inlays and a converted lectern where the old pulpit once stood. The light falls through tall lancets and geometric tracery, giving the space a calm and ordered feel.
