Schloss Kronwinkl

Schloss Kronwinkl stands on a high bank of the Isar in Niederbayern, near the village of Eching. It is the ancestral seat of the Preysing family, who have owned it since the castle’s beginnings. A medieval bergfried from the 12th or 13th century still rises at its heart. Later, in the 16th and 17th centuries, living quarters were added inside the old ring wall. The site is protected both as a monument and as an archaeological zone with traces of earlier buildings. The castle’s story includes a colourful chapter in the early 1970s when it was rented first by a Munich commune led by Uschi Obermaier and Rainer Langhans, then by the band Amon Düül II. The band recorded the track “Kronwinkl 12” there in 1972. Today the owner is Caspar Graf von Preysing-Lichtenegg-Moos, and Ladislaja Gräfin von und zu Eltz lived in the castle until her death in 2023. Visitors find the medieval bergfried, the later Renaissance living quarters, and the lower chapel of St Stephan. The castle is surrounded by a park that contains remains of older phases of building. Nearby, the listed Schlosswirtschaft and the church of St Stephan stand as part of the same estate.
