Margam Stones Museum

The Margam Stones Museum stands in a small Victorian schoolhouse beside Margam Abbey Church in Neath Port Talbot. The building once served as a church school before Cadw, the Welsh historic sites agency, turned it into a home for one of Britain’s most important collections of Celtic stone crosses. All the stones were found locally and gathered in the 19th century by the Talbot family, who later gave them to the nation. The collection spans a thousand years of Welsh Christian culture, from the 6th to the 16th centuries. The most famous piece is the Cross of Conbelin, a huge disc cross carved with hunting scenes and intricate Celtic patterns. The stones offer a rare look at early Welsh Christianity through striking carvings and inscriptions. Seventeen pre-Norman stones are displayed on the ground floor, including Latin-inscribed memorials, cross slabs and sculptured crosses. The Latin memorials date from 450 to 650 AD and carry some of the earliest written Welsh, such as a family tree on one stone. The sculptured crosses from 900 to 1100 AD show finely worked lattice and plaitwork patterns, with inscriptions naming the carvers and patrons. Among them is the Cross of Conbelin, carved around 1000 AD with both figurative scenes and text. Visitors find the stones arranged by type and age, with the pre-Norman pieces on the ground floor and later memorials upstairs. The Roman Milepost and post-Roman memorial stands near the entrance, its reused shaft bearing both imperial Latin and a 6th-century Welsh inscription. The Bodvoc Stone, moved from a mountain cairn, carries a warning in folk tradition that reading its inscription would bring death. Outside, the ruins of Margam Abbey and the parish church stand close by, adding to the sense of history in the quiet grounds.
