St Michael's Church, Torpenhow

St Michael’s Church stands in the quiet parish of Blennerhasset and Torpenhow, a small village in Cumbria’s rolling northern countryside. Built mainly of local sandstone under a green slate roof, the church has grown since the early 12th century through later medieval additions and later restorations. Traces of an earlier Saxon building were noted during the 1913 work, and some stone may have come from the nearby Roman fort at Old Carlisle. The structure mixes Norman, medieval and later styles, with round-headed windows, carved arches and a Tudor-style south porch. Inside, the nave ceiling painted with cupids and garlands was gifted in 1689 by Thomas Addison, brother of the essayist Joseph Addison. The church is worth visiting for its rare Norman features and layered history. The chancel arch carries demon-like figures on one side and human and animal carvings on the other, while the south aisle’s battlemented parapet adds a fortified look. Medieval gravestones have been reused as lintels, and a piscina close to a possible Roman carving hints at earlier influences. The Jacobean pulpit and panelled choir stalls from 1882 sit beside 20th-century furnishings, showing continuous use. Stained glass by Clayton and Bell adds colour, and the open bellcote at the west end completes the skyline. Visitors find a three-bay nave with north and south aisles and a north transept, leading to a three-bay chancel. The blocked west doorway and 15th-century two-light window mark the building’s changes over time. The south porch shelters a medieval gravestone, and the north transept still shows its 1614 timber roof. The painted nave ceiling and panelled chancel ceiling frame the space, while the font’s Norman bowl and simple Jacobean pulpit stand ready for worship and reflection.
