Church of St Patrick

The Church of St Patrick stands in the quiet village of Patrick Brompton in North Yorkshire. It is the parish church for the surrounding area and one of six in the Benefice of Lower Wensleydale. The oldest parts of the building date back to the 11th century, though most of the structure comes from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries. It is one of only two churches in Yorkshire dedicated to St Patrick, the other being at Patrington. The church is built of sandstone with Westmorland slates on the roof, reflecting its patronage by St Mary’s Abbey in York. The church has a long history tied to local events. A place of worship existed on the site before the 12th century, and the dedication to St Patrick may honour a landowner named Ghile Patraic from the time of the Norman conquest. The tower, rebuilt in the 19th century, replaced an earlier structure blown down in a storm. Inside, the nave and aisles date largely from the 12th century, while the chancel is in the Decorated style. The churchyard contains listed gravestones, a First World War memorial and a sundial commemorating parishioners who settled in Newfoundland and Maryland. Visitors find a building shaped by centuries of use and change. The tower houses three bells, the oldest from 1400, and the north-east wall still bears marks where archers sharpened their arrows between 1100 and 1500. The porch and tower are modern additions, while the interior fabric remains largely medieval. The churchyard also holds a memorial to two Commonwealth war graves. The sundial outside the porch records the names of local settlers in the New World, adding another layer to the site’s history.
