Trisanna

The Trisanna is a swift mountain river in the Austrian Alps. It begins where the Vermuntbach and Jambach meet near Galtür, high in the Paznaun valley. The river flows east and north through steep slopes between the Silvretta, Samnaun and Verwall ranges. The Trisanna drains a rugged landscape of glaciers and peaks above 3,000 metres. Water from its basin powers hydro-electric plants in the Silvretta and Kops reservoirs. In August 2005 a huge flood tore through the valley, shifting the river’s course by nearly half a kilometre and flooding villages. Visitors walk along the Trisanna’s gravel banks and through the narrow Trisannaklamm gorge. The river stays clear and fast, lined by alpine meadows and scattered farms. Where it meets the Rosanna near Schloss Wiesberg the waters merge into the Sanna. The valley road follows the river, giving views of waterfalls and high peaks on every side.
