Idarkopf

The Idarkopf is a mountain in the Hunsrück range, standing 745.7 metres above sea level. It lies within the Idar Forest, near the villages of Stipshausen and Hochscheid in Rheinland-Pfalz. The Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park surrounds the area, offering protected landscapes and quiet trails. The Idarbach stream flows past its northeastern slopes, adding to the natural setting. The summit itself is divided between Stipshausen and Weitersbach, with the mountain’s flanks stretching across both villages. The mountain is worth visiting for its wide views from the Idarkopf Tower. The tower stands just 200 metres northwest of the summit at 744.2 metres high. From its platform, visitors can see the Taunus hills, the Donnersberg across the Hunsrück, the Eifel region, and the Westerwald. A second tower, a transmission mast, stands 300 metres northeast of the summit at about 738 metres. These structures provide clear vantage points over the surrounding countryside. A visitor to the Idarkopf finds open woodland paths leading to the summit and the observation tower. The Idar Forest offers walking routes through quiet, shaded trails. The views from the tower stretch across several German regions, making it a good spot for sightseeing. The nearby villages of Stipshausen and Hochscheid provide small cafés and places to rest. In winter, the area becomes a quiet winter sports region, with gentle slopes for skiing and snowboarding. The contrast between the forested slopes and the wide panoramas makes the Idarkopf a rewarding destination.
