Schloss Annaburg

Schloss Annaburg stands in the small town of Annaburg in Saxony-Anhalt, built in the 16th century as a Renaissance hunting lodge for the Electors of Saxony. It replaced an older castle and became a retreat with an elaborate garden for Kurfürst Friedrich III, known as Friedrich the Wise. After his death in 1525, his successor Kurfürst August I ordered a grander residence in 1572, naming it after his wife Anna. The new building reused stone from demolished castles nearby and became a leading example of Saxon Renaissance architecture. The castle’s history includes its role as a residence for Kurfürstin Anna, who ran a distillery and the first Saxon court pharmacy. Later it served for over 150 years as a military orphan school from 1762 to 1921. The complex was divided into a Vorderschloss and Hinterschloss, each with distinct functions and styles. A fire in 1874 destroyed the chapel, leading to the creation of a library and later a prayer hall with an organ by Conrad Geißler. Today the Vorderschloss contains modern flats, while the Hinterschloss houses a small museum and plans for cultural revival. The museum displays the castle’s development, the military school era, and the preserved Fladerdecke, one of Europe’s earliest wall coverings. The Hinterschloss courtyard features a 1585 staircase tower and a two-storey loggia. Nearby buildings include a former barracks, a late-baroque hospital, and an old hunting lodge, all part of the estate’s layered past.
