Hitchin Museum and Art Gallery

Hitchin Museum and Art Gallery stands in North Hertfordshire, a local history museum in the town of Hitchin. It was founded in 1939 by the Hitchin & District Regional Survey Association in a house given by grocers Ralph and Hubert Moss. The house, built in 1825, was first known as Agadir and later as Charnwood. The building opened in 1939 as a public library, with the top floor becoming a museum in 1941. The library moved to an extension next door in the late 1960s, and since 1974 the museum has been run by North Hertfordshire District Council. The museum was valued by visitors but was described as unfit for purpose in a 2004–5 service review. The review recommended closing Hitchin and Letchworth museums and creating a new museum and gallery on a single town-centre site. A feasibility study explored converting Hitchin Town Hall for museum use. The North Hertfordshire Museum, designed by Buttress with museum layout by Mather & Co., opened in July 2019. Visitors to the new museum find displays that tell the story of Hitchin’s social history and rural industries. The collections include objects from the original museum’s holdings, now shown in an East of England Broadband Network gallery. The museum’s exhibits highlight the town’s past, from its social development to the industries that shaped its prosperity. The surroundings include the town centre, offering easy access to other local attractions.
