Hütteldorfer Bad

The Hütteldorfer Bad was a summer swimming pool in Vienna’s 14th district, Penzing. It stood on a 2 800-square-metre plot in what is now the Ferdinand-Wolf-Park. The city of Vienna owned the site and ran the facility for most of its life. The pool first appears in records from 1868, when Hütteldorf’s local council discussed re-letting it. After the surrounding suburbs joined Vienna in 1891 the city took over. In 1884 it bought land from the Empress Elisabeth Railway to lengthen the main pool and planned a new water pipe, replacing the old feed from the nearby Mühlbach. From 1920 the city ran the baths itself, but by 1968 the small site could no longer be enlarged. The pool closed for good in 1979 and was replaced by the Waldbad Penzing, later rebuilt as the Hallenbad Hütteldorf. Visitors in the 1960s found two pools, each 25 by 11.5 metres. There were 154 changing cubicles, 230 lockers and 187 hooks. The site could hold about 2 400 bathers at a time. Today the Ferdinand-Wolf-Park covers the former grounds, with no trace of the baths left above ground.
