Arding & Hobbs

Arding & Hobbs stands at the corner of Lavender Hill and St John’s Road in Battersea, a Grade II listed Edwardian Baroque building. The present structure replaced an earlier shop destroyed by fire in 1909 and was completed in 1910 to designs by architect James Gibson. It began life as a department store in 1876 before passing through several owners, including John Anstiss, United Drapery Stores and Allders. The building was later split between Debenhams and TK Maxx after Allders closed in 2005. Its most famous cinematic appearance came in the 1981 thriller Nighthawks, where a bombed-out version of the store appeared on screen. The site has also featured in popular television, notably the 1994 Mr Bean episode “Do-It-Yourself Mr. Bean.” A music video for The Human League’s song “Life On Your Own” used the empty building as the setting for a post-apocalyptic London. The store’s long history reflects the changing fortunes of Battersea and the wider retail landscape. Its grand façade remains a landmark at a busy junction where Lavender Hill meets St John’s Road. The building’s Edwardian Baroque style gives it a confident presence among the surrounding streets. Visitors to the corner today see a split façade, one half still showing Debenhams fittings despite the store’s closure. The other half houses TK Maxx, its shopfront occupying part of the original grand entrance. The building’s scale and detailing recall its department-store past, with tall windows and ornate stonework. The junction itself is a busy transport hub, linking Battersea with Clapham Junction. The structure stands as a reminder of the area’s retail heritage and its place in London’s architectural history.
