Grand Theatre

The Grand stands on St John’s Hill near Clapham Junction in Battersea, South London. It is a Grade II listed building designed by Ernest Woodrow and opened in 1900 as a variety theatre. The building once held 3,000 seats and a stage measuring 20.7 by 8.5 metres. It began as The New Grand Theatre of Varieties with a programme of music hall acts. Dan Leno, Herbert Campbell, Harry Randall and Fred Williams led the consortium behind its creation. After decades as a cinema and bingo hall, the false ceiling installed in the 1960s was later removed. The Grand has hosted major performers across generations. Acts including The Kinks, Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Oasis, Muse and Jamie Cullum have appeared on its stage. Television’s Taskmaster filmed its first series here, using the venue’s interior as its studio. Corin Redgrave and Vanessa Redgrave campaigned to restore the building to theatrical use after earlier plans failed. Today it operates as a nightclub, live music venue, theatre and event space under independent ownership. Inside, the restored auditorium reveals its original scale and decorative details. The stage remains large enough for full productions and concerts. The upper levels, once partitioned off, are now open again to the public. The building’s varied past—music hall, cinema, bingo club—adds layers to its character. Its location on a busy hillside makes it a landmark for visitors arriving by train or bus. The venue continues to programme diverse events while preserving its Edwardian heritage.
