St Mary's Chapel, Lead

St Mary’s Chapel stands alone in fields near Saxton in North Yorkshire. It is a small stone chapel built in the 14th century, once linked to a medieval manor house owned by the Tyas family. The chapel has a simple rectangular plan with a bellcote at the west end and benches that may date from the medieval period. Excavations in 1934 uncovered an earlier 9th- or 10th-century grave slab and the foundations of a larger building. The chapel was enlarged in the 18th century and later restored in the 1930s after falling into ruin. The chapel is closely tied to the Battle of Towton in 1461, fought during the Wars of the Roses. By 1931 it was in ruins until a group of local ramblers organised its rescue and re-dedicated it in 1932. Repairs included moving the three-decker pulpit and adding a stone altar with a medieval slab on top. The chapel became redundant in the late 20th century and was taken over by the Churches Conservation Trust in 1980. Inside, the east wall displays boards with sentences from 18th-century Holy Communion services. The chapel contains a three-decker pulpit, a stone altar, and a font, all arranged in a plain interior. An annual service is held, organised by the Friends of Lead Church. The isolated setting and simple stone structure give the chapel a quiet, reflective atmosphere.
