Heimathaus Vorst

The Heimathaus Vorst sits in the Kuhstraße in Vorst, a suburb of Tönisvorst. It occupies a former shop whose large display window now hosts rotating exhibitions. The building also contains a lending library run by the town. Since 2002 the Heimatverein Vorst 1978 e. V. – “Friends of the Vöörschter Platt” – has managed the space. The house preserves local life through several rooms. The ground floor holds a full historical shoemaker’s workshop called “Koene Mattes.” Upstairs a small gallery displays portraits of past Vorst priests and other relics of the village’s past. Temporary shows cover themes such as rural life or carnival traditions. The society also keeps an archive of local newspapers, posters and the writings of dialect poet Walter Lehnen. Visitors find changing displays in the shop window every few weeks. The upstairs hall hosts readings in the local dialect. Guided walks through the district explain the area’s history. Members receive a free magazine twice a year and can listen to the club’s podcast. Around six hundred people belong to the association, working to keep Vorst’s heritage alive.
