Burg Kaiserberg

The Kaiserberg is a ruined hilltop fort on the Kaiserberg hill in Duisburger Stadtteil Duissern. It stands above the Rhine and once controlled a key crossing point. Traces of ditches and ramparts show the site was fortified in the Bronze and Iron Ages. Later, Romans used the spot for a forward post. A medieval wall and ditch were added when the nearby Kaiserpfalz was expanded in the 10th century. The hill still carries a high rampart with a counterscarp trench along its crest. A modern lookout tower was built in the early 20th century and appears on old postcards. Archaeologists from Duisburg city have mapped these layers of defence. The oldest remains belong to the Iron Age settlers who lived nearby. Roman soldiers then took over the strong point for their own use. Visitors walk a grassy path to the top of the Kaiserberg. The main rampart runs along the ridge, offering wide views over the Rhine valley. Sections of the old ditch are still visible beside the path. The lookout tower stands near the highest point, giving a clear view of Duisburg and the river. The site is quiet, with only the sound of wind and distant traffic. Information boards explain the different ages of the defences.
