Burg Schaubeck

Burg Schaubeck stands on a steep slope between Steinheim an der Murr and Kleinbottwar in the Ludwigsburg district. Built from the 13th century onwards, it began as a fortress before later expansions turned it into a stately home. The site includes the remains of a Roman villa beneath its foundations, with only fragments of walls and a moat’s depression still visible. The castle’s history is marked by frequent changes of ownership. First held by the von Schaubeck family, it passed through the hands of the von Urbachs, Truchsessen von Stetten, and von Plieningens before Dietrich von Plieningen began its transformation into a more comfortable residence in 1480. The von Plieningen line ended in 1645, and the castle later belonged to the von Gaisbergs, von Kniestedts, and finally the Adelmann family in 1914. Raban Adelmann restored the building from 1935, ensuring its survival to this day. Visitors today find a well-preserved medieval core with a striking spiral staircase tower. The 18th-century north and west facades display painted red-and-violet corner stones, blending Renaissance and Baroque styles. The inner courtyard is framed by timber-framed buildings added during the 17th-century remodelling. The castle remains a private residence, but wine from the family’s estate is sold on site. The surrounding park opens only during special events like the biennial wine and culture festival.
