Dorchester Abbey Museum

Dorchester Abbey Museum sits in the quiet village of Dorchester, Oxfordshire, beside the ancient Dorchester Abbey. The museum uses two buildings on the abbey grounds. One is the Old Schoolroom, once part of the abbey’s 14th-century guest house. The other is the Cloister Gallery, built in 2001 against the abbey’s north wall. The displays show how the area has been lived in for more than six thousand years. Artefacts, maps and illustrations tell the story of Dorchester and its surroundings. A historical archive holds written records of the past. The Cloister Gallery’s permanent exhibition, “If Stones Could Speak,” uses medieval stonework to bring the abbey’s history to life. The gallery was short-listed for the 2006 Gulbenkian Prize. Visitors walk through rooms that once served the abbey’s guests. They see carved stones and moulded shapes from the Middle Ages. The exhibits explain how the buildings have changed over centuries. Outside, the abbey’s grounds offer a peaceful place to pause. The museum shows how a single site can hold layers of human experience.
