Monument to Sir Briggs

The Monument to Sir Briggs is a memorial to a horse that carried Captain Godfrey Morgan during the Crimean War. It stands in the grounds of Tredegar House, a large mansion on the western edge of Newport, Wales. The monument dates from about 1874 and is made of granite. It is surrounded by a circular yew hedge and carries an inscription. The structure is Grade II listed, meaning it is recognised for its special interest. The horse, originally named Briggs, was bought as a racehorse in 1851. He served with Captain Morgan in the Crimea, where he was wounded during the Charge of the Light Brigade. Morgan later gave him the title ‘Sir Briggs’ in recognition of his service. After the war, Briggs returned to Wales and lived at Tredegar House until his death in 1874. The monument was raised over his grave in the Cedar Garden. Visitors to the grounds of Tredegar House will find the obelisk monument near the Cedar Garden. A sculptural carving shows Morgan standing beside Sir Briggs. The garden itself is planted with cedars, providing a quiet setting for the memorial. Nearby, a model of Sir Briggs made of willow and decorated with poppies was added in 2024. The house also holds paintings and an equestrian statue that further honour the horse’s story.
