Podington Castle

Podington Castle stands in Bedfordshire, England, as the remains of an 11th-century motte-and-triple-bailey castle. It was surrounded by a moat and recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 under Hugh the Fleming. By the early 17th century the castle had fallen into ruins. A new manor house, now called Old Podington Manor, was built just in front of the old site. Old Podington Manor later became a farmhouse in 1694 when its owners moved away. The earthworks of the original castle survive on a mound behind the manor. Building foundations were still visible in 1972. Visitors can walk around the earthworks and see the raised mound where the castle once stood. The field behind Old Podington Manor shows the castle’s former layout. The moat’s outline can still be traced in the landscape. The site offers a quiet glimpse of medieval defences.
