The Prinz-Carl-Palais is a classical city palace in Darmstadt-Bessungen, built between 1834 and 1836 for Prince Karl of Hesse and his wife Princess Marie. The palace stands a few hundred metres south of Darmstadt’s centre, near the Neues Palais but on the former land of Bessungen. It was designed by Georg Moller as a residence for the prince and his Prussian bride after their wedding in Berlin.

The palace is notable for its elegant architecture and royal connections. The couple’s marriage in 1836 was celebrated with an opera and a grand masked ball for 2,500 guests at the Hoftheater. The palace also witnessed the return of their son, later Grand Duke Friedrich Wilhelm IV, after his marriage to Princess Alice of England in 1862. Inside, the marble staircase reflects the later Bauhaus style, while the Blue Room of Princess Elisabeth remains a highlight in Biedermeier design.

Today the building serves as the headquarters of the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Hessen. Its symmetrical façade along Annastraße features a mix of hipped and mansard roofs. The original palace and its later extension meet in an inner courtyard with separate entrances. The exterior shows classical proportions, while inside the grand staircase and historic rooms preserve the refined taste of the 19th century.
