Balmoral Hotel

The Balmoral Hotel stands at the east end of Princes Street in Edinburgh, beside North Bridge and Waverley Steps. It occupies a corner site between the Old Town and the New Town, with the castle rock rising behind and Princes Street shops in front. Designed in the late 19th century for the North British Railway Company, the building mixes Victorian grandeur with Scottish baronial touches. Its red sandstone façade and tall clock tower make it a landmark in the city centre. The hotel was once linked to Waverley Station by a private lift for passengers and luggage. The hotel’s history includes a famous chloroform discovery nearby and a royal reopening by Sean Connery. It has housed Michelin-starred dining and five-star luxury, and its clock tower is known for running three minutes fast. Writers and broadcasters have stayed here, from J. K. Rowling to Michael Palin, while Laurel and Hardy once drew crowds outside. The hotel’s past owners range from railway companies to Rocco Forte Hotels, and it has been a Category B listed building since 1994. Inside, visitors find the J. K. Rowling Suite with its signed marble bust and glass display. The Number One restaurant once held a Michelin star, and refurbished bedrooms look toward Edinburgh Castle. The clock tower’s four dials face the station and the street, and its mechanism—now computer-controlled—still contains the original parts. Outside, Princes Street’s shops and the castle rock frame the view, while Waverley Steps lead down to the station.
