Klarissenkloster St. Klara

The St.-Klara-Kloster once stood in Altspeyer, a suburb of Speyer in Rheinland-Pfalz. Founded in the 13th or early 14th century by Clarissan nuns from Oggersheim, it housed up to nineteen sisters at its height. The nuns lived under strict rules but gained early support from local people and nobles who donated land and money for prayers. By 1510 the convent had expanded through land swaps arranged by Äbtissin Barbara von Helmstädt. The Reformation brought threats to the monastery’s income and status. In 1525 armed citizens forced the city council to reduce the convent’s revenues, and shortly afterwards officials sealed and inventoried its property. The situation worsened in 1552 when troops under Albrecht von Brandenburg looted many Speyer monasteries during religious wars. Äbtissin Apollina Fröhlich later secured timber for repairs from Bishop Philipp von Flersheim in 1547. Visitors today can still trace the outline of the former monastery near the Martinskirche in Altspeyer. The site preserves memories of the nuns’ daily life, their struggles during the Reformation, and later conflicts that tested their discipline. The old garden granted by Äbtissin Agatha Wallei in 1572 once supplied herbs and vegetables. Though only ruins remain, the place recalls a community that persisted for nearly six centuries before its end in 1799.
